Abstract
%85,4'ü normal internet kullanıcısı, %14,1'i riskli internet kullanıcı ve %0,5'i bağımlı internet kullanıcısıydı. Aim: In recent times, obesity has become one of the chronic disorders affecting the larger population than any other chronic diseases in the world. Risk factors that have been implicated in the development of obesity have included genetic, socioeconomic and environmental parameters. However, little is known about the role of internet addiction in the improvement of obesity .The internet which its use becoming an integral part of our daily lives; provides an enormous educational benefits to medical students. But excessive internet use can lead to negative outcomes such as psychopathological symptoms and obesity. This study was undertaken with the objective to find out the prevalence of overweight and obesity among medical students as future physicians and its association with internet addiction. Material and Method: This study was planned as a cross-sectional analytical study and is applied to 1, 2, 3 and 6. grade students who receive education at Ondokuz Mayıs University Medical Faculty. By reviewing previous studies about the subject, a questionnaire form asking about the variables causing obesity along with demographic data and the Internet cognitive status scale (ICDS), which is an internet addiction evaluation scale was used as data collection tools. Questionnaires conducted with 1, 2 and 3. grade students face to face before clinical skills laboratory classes. Sixth class students answered the questionnaires face to face during their Family Medicine rotations. Data put into computer environment and the relation between variables were examined. Analyses were made according to parametric and nonparametric conditions. Statistical significance level was accepted as p<0.05. Results: 370 students who receive education at OMU medical faculty were included into our study. Of the individuals who completed the questionnaire, %52.2 was female and %47.8 was male and the average age was found to be 21,26±2,33 ( min: 17- max:34 )years old . %29.7 was in the first grade, %24.9 was in the second grade, %20 was in the third grade and %25.4 was in the sixth grade. The average of the individual Internet addiction scale was found to be as 35,16±12,94 (min:20-maks:80). % 85.4 were normal internet users, %14.1 were risky internet users and % 0.5 were dependent Internet users. According to body mass indexes (BMI) calculated by learning body height and body weight of medical school students; the average BMI of the students was 22,42 ± 2,97 (min: 13,85-max: 31,22) kg/m2, % 7.0 was weak, %75,7 was normal and %15,9 was overweight and %1.4 was obese. According to ICDS , risky internet users and dependent internet users were combined . %85.4 was normal internet user and %14.6 was risky or dependent internet user. There was no statistically significant difference between the BMI groups of the students in terms of the internet addiction status. Conclusion: Internet dependency, also known as non-controlled use of the Internet, does not yet have a well-defined diagnostic and evaluation criterion as in other addiction types. It is also necessary to support with other studies about internet addiction in obesity formation , determine targets for struggle with this disease which is a global health problem and increase interest in this issue in Turkey.
