Abstract

The synthesis and molecular structure of the dinicotinamidium salt, 2C <inf>6</inf>H<inf>7</inf>N<inf>2</inf>+·C<inf>4</inf>O <inf>4</inf>2- were reported. The structure revealed that the squarate dianion resides on an inversion center and the unique cation in a general position. Salt formation took place by donation of two H atoms from squaric acid to the nicotinamide base. The crystal packing was derived from three types of hydrogen bonding. The hydrogen bonds were also found to be responsible for the planarity of the nictotinamide moiety in the salt.
