Publication: Türkiye'de İngiliz Dili Eğitimi Alanında Dinleme Becerisi Üzerine Yazılan Yüksek Lisans Tezlerin İncelenmesi
Abstract
Listening has an important role in effective communication. However, its significance has been underrated in language education. Nunan (1998) states that listening is the Cinderella skill in second language learning since it has far too frequently been overlooked by speaking, its older sister, in spite of its significance in the development of communicative skills. On the other hand, examining studies and research trends in the field of English language teaching has become a new phenomenon. While research articles are more commonly studied internationally, theses and dissertations on research trend studies have been studied in Turkish context. Examining research studies guide further researchers and provide pedagogical implications in terms of untouched fields and topics. Therefore, the current study aims to analyze master's studies conducted in Türkiye in order to find out whether listening is the Cinderella skill in the field of ELT or not. This study utilizes a descriptive method to explore the current state of listening skill in master's theses produced within the last ten years. Document analysis is used to gather data through analyzing master's theses. Content analysis which is an important part of document analysis is implemented during data analysis process. Findings show that there are 1444 master's theses have been published in ELT, 866 of which focus on other topics, while 578 of which center upon language skills. Among language skills, the most focused ones are speaking, writing and vocabulary and reading; however, grammar, listening and pronunciation are studied less. It was also concluded that there are 94 master's theses focusing on language skills in an integrative way. Among these master's theses, listening is frequent in 49 studies. Master's theses focusing on listening skills were deeply analyzed in terms of their current topics, methodologies, subjects in order to figure out their current trends in the field.
