Publication: Smintheion Mozaikleri
Abstract
In the Smintheion, a sanctuary dedicated to Apollo Smintheus in the southwestern corner of the Troas Region, the ground mosaics unearthed in scientific excavations from the museum excavations in the 1970s until today provide important data for the identification of the Roman and Late Antiquity periods. Within the scope of the master's thesis titled 'Smintheion Mosaics', it was envisaged to examine all of the ground mosaics and studies were carried out in this direction. As a result of this study, 15 mosaics containing five different building complexes were examined. The mosaics were evaluated in an architectural context and dated with archaeological finds. It is divided into 'geometric (29 pieces), floral (6 pieces) and figured (5 pieces)' motifs and evaluated in three groups. The geometric motifs with the most intense proportions were followed by floral motifs. Within the scope of the thesis, an evaluation has been made by making comparisons of motifs between regions, and it has gained importance in terms of shedding light on its relationship with neighboring regions.
