Abstract
THE INVESTIGATION IN POINT OF TAXONOMIC AND FAUNATIC OF THE RIVER MERT (SAMSUN) FISHES ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to find out the fish species inhabiting in The River Mert. The study was conducted between the dates of May 1999 and June 2000. Four stations all representing the ecological characters of The River Mert were determined for fish collection along The River. Totally 244 fish samples were caught by electro - shocker, scoop nets, fish nets and fishing lines during the study time. In this study 3 species and 2 sub-species belonging to 3 families were identified. These were identified : Leuciscus cephalus orientalis NORDMAN.1840; Capoeta capoeta sieboldi STEİNDACHNER, 1864; Capoeta tinea HECKEL, 1843 from Cyprinidae family; Orthrias (Noemacheilus) angorae STEİNDACHNER, 1897 from Cobitidae family; Gobius (Neogobius) fluviatilis PALLAS, 1811 from Gobiidae family. A species identification key composed of diagnostic characters, at the level of family was prepared to facilitate the idendification of species and subspecies obtained from The River Mert. The synonyms, terra typicas, local names, taxonomical characters, ecological features, reproduction behaviors, economical importance, cathces and geographical distributions of the fish species were made according to the datas of this study and references. The systematical characters determined in this study were compared to data recorded with similiar studies about the mentioned fish species and sub species. The original photographs of all the species and subspecies were represented at the end of this study. It is concluded that 3 of the total 5 taxons were economically important as human food. These were Leuciscus cephalus orientalis, Capoeta capoeta sieboldi, and Capoeta tinea which were also most abundant ones. Also Orthrias (Noemacheilus) angorae was observed to be more abundant than Gobius (Neogobius) fluviatilis. In conclusion of this study some suggestions were made about the protection and the evaluation of the economically important fishes inhabiting in The River Mert. Key Words: The River Mert, Fish, Taxonomy, Fauna.
