Abstract
Yusuf b. Yahya el-Çerkesi lived in the time of the Otoman Empire when it was its most birilliant time for both political and educational aspect between the end of the 15th century and the first half of the 16th century. Çerkesi, about whose life we do not have enough information, had education in Islamic subjects such as Arabic, Islamic Law, Hadith, commentary on the Quran, and later wrote a rationalist commantery on the Quran called Cem?u?l-Meali consisting of two volumes in one book we have already examined. It is seen that Çerkesi benefited much in his commentary from those of commentaries such as Beydavi?s, Zemahşeri?s, Taberi?s and Ibn Kesir?s. While as a rationalistt commentary Cemul Meali includes some knowledge relating to the various Islamic subjects such as Islamic Law, theology, Islamic sects, language and rhetoric, it mainly concerns with the aspect of its rivayet (narration). Although Çerkesi held the belief of Orthodox Islam called ahl-i Sunnah in faith, he rejected the views of Mutazileh in some explainations of the verses based on various proofs.Although Cerkesi?s book contains very valuable knowledge in various fields, he did not use an original method in his book. Thus, it can be said that this book was written by benefiting from earlier commanteries, was used similar methods with its contemporaries, and written in a small size.
