Publication: Çocuk İstismarının İntraoral-Ekstraoral Bulgularına Yönelik Tıp Fakültesi Öğrencilerinin Bilgi Düzeyinin Değerlendirilmesi
Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study is to measure the level of knowledge and attitudes of medical school students about the intraoral and extraoral findings of child abuse. Material and Method: In this study, a questionnaire including questions about attitude and knowledge level about child abuse was applied to a total of 654 medical students, 4th, 5th and 6th grades, who were attending Turkish at Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine. Chi-square test and Fisher's Exact test were used in the statistical analysis of the data. Results: It was determined that the percentage of answering the questionnaire was 92.37%. When the educational status of the students regarding child abuse was examined, the 6th grade students were found to be statistically significantly higher (p<0.05). 88.22% of all grade students stated that they could recognize the intra-extraoral signs of child abuse (p=0,032). The highest rate of correct answers regarding the anamnesis findings indicating child abuse was found in the 4th grades with 67.79% (p=0,423). The rate of recognizing intraoral findings was found to be significantly lower in 5th grades (p<0,01). The level of knowledge about extraoral findings was found to be significantly higher in 4th grades with 49.15% (p=0,018). The 6th grade students had the highest level of knowledge about sociodemographic characteristics with 88.15% (p=0,036). No statistically significant difference was found between the classes in the evaluation of the level of knowledge about the legal responsibilities of reporting abuse (p=0,036). Conclusion: This study showed that medical students had insufficient knowledge about the findings of child abuse. It was concluded that there is a need to develop child abuse lessons, seminars and curriculum in the education system in order to raise awareness on this issue. Keywords: child abuse; oral signs; child abuse awareness; medical students
