In order to determine the saltwater intrusion, geophysical, hydrogeological and hydrochemical data were collected on Bafra plain. In the plain, due to the presence of freshwater, saltwater aquifer and the geological units containing clays, it is difficult to independently interpret Electrical and Electromagnetic data. Interpretation of Direct Current Resistivity and Transient Electromagnetic data by constraining with Seismic Refraction data is a powerful tool in the identification of fresh and saline water within clay-based formations. In this study, in order to obtain a detailed knowledge of salinity boundaries and aquifer geometry, we interpreted multiple geophysical data guided by hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical data. Finally, we interpreted that salt water intrusion is occurring on inland up to 3.5 km. Fresh water can also be taken from the aquifers up to the first 10 m from the surface. After the first 10 m deep in the plain, salt water intrusion is occurred. The saltwater intrusion can move towards the inner parts if the groundwater attraction is not controlled especially in the parts close to the river. © 2017 European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers EAGE.
