Abstract
The purpose of this Ph. D. Dissertation is to examine the history of the Presbyterian Church which arose during the Reformation in Scotland, and its main teachings, socio-cultural and political organizations, as well as its formation and missionary activities in Turkey. In this study, after dealing with the historical development of Reformation briefly, we focused on the historical development of the influential Presbyterian churches in Scotland, England, Ireland and the USA from the earlier times to the present day. Then we tried to expose the main Presbyterian sources such as the Bible, confessions, catechisms and directions for worships. After analyzing the Presbyterian form of church government, we dealt with the missionary activities of Presbyterians, their educational systems, their relationship with the state, and the Turkish World Presbyterian Church. At the end of this study, we concluded that the Presbyterian Church depends on John Calvin's theology both historically and doctrinally. The most important result of this definition is that the Presbyterian Church has become rather a rigid and conservative one among the other Protestant churches. Moreover, the Presbyterian Church, by its form of church government and educational institutions, has contributed to the other Protestant churches in the process of secularization of Europe Presbyterians have attracted attention by their missionary works. In this respect, the American Presbyterian churches have become one of the leading missionary churches since the nineteenth century. In addition to this, Presbyterian churches not only influenced the post-Reformation era but continued to exert influence up to the present day in socio-cultural, political and religious life of the USA and Europe. Presbyterian missionaries are effective in Turkey. They were active in missionary works by social activities and supporting some old local churches such as Gregorian (Armenian) Church. But in the course of time they gradually resorted to open propoganda. The Presbyterian tradition represents the conservative side among the Protestant churches and the Turkish World Presbyterian Church, which was established in 1993 in Istanbul as a result of the missionary activities in this country, has close connections with some most conservative Presbyterian churches. The Church, however, tries to expose a liberal image towards common opinion in Turkey.
