Publication: Siberpunk Filmlerde Siborg Kadın Karakterlerin Cinsiyet Kimliklerinin Analizi
Abstract
This thesis seeks an answer to the question of what kind of identity design cyborg female figures have on the basis of gender and how this identity design is constructed in cyberpunk movies. How women are represented and how female characters are constructed in cyberpunk movies have been critically examined using descriptive analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods within the framework of concepts such as subject, body, power, identity, otherness, memory, belonging, and the themes and main elements in cyberpunk. This study aims to question the seizure of the body and mind transformed by excessive technology and information invasion, and the identity/existence of the anti-hero cyborg, who became a transcendent being from a metal pile, in the face of the alienation of time-space in cyberspace equipped with unlimited cyber networks. It is important to analyze the alienated and controlled identity of the cyborg and what kind of design the body built upon this identity has in the terms of gender. Accordingly, Mardock Scramble: The First Compression (Susumu Kudo, 2010), Alita: Battle Angel (Robert Rodriguez, 2019) and Captain Marvel (Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, 2019) in which cyberpunk women play the leading role as the main character or one of the main characters were selected using the simulated sampling method, one of the purposeful sampling methods. In the analyzed cyberpunk movies the cyberpunk female figures sometimes reflect the patriarchal perspective from time to time, yet existing women with their new bodies not only shake the traditionally weak and passive norms of patriarchal femininity, but also assumed a destructive task of masculine domination and hegemonic perceptions by equally positioning the active male character and tried to bring an alternative perspective to the representation of women in cinema as acting subjects. Key Words: Cyborg woman, cyberpunk movies, gender, subject, body.
