Publication: Description of Sexuality by Individuals Performing Paired Dance
Abstract
As a result of the qualitative researches, a literature review related to this subject was conducted, especially since the Turkish society generally encountered the result that their purpose of dancing consists of sexuality, for individuals who danced with a partner. However, considering the situation of two people with the opposite sex moving in the same rhythm accompanied by music, it was realized that although sexuality is quite normal to come to mind, there were not enough enlightening studies under the title of dance and sexuality. Since the studies conducted are generally qualitative studies that give results based on interpretations through external observation, these two titles need research that can be measured, be reproducible with measurements that can be expressed with numerical data, and put forward objectively, that is, quantitative research. Because of this need, individuals dancing with their partners were observed in classes, practices and dance nights in order to measure and evaluate their perceptions of sexuality, sociality and self-confidence, as a result of the interviews with the dancers, it was understood that these people kept the concept of dance away from sexuality, especially considering their dance times. On the contrary, it was concluded that they danced generally for the purpose of feeling good and socializing. As a result of these observations and interviews, this study was aproached and as a priority, the survey questions were asked twice with 3 months intervals to a group of 50 people who had never danced, afterwards, a group of 100 people who danced for 2-4 months were asked the measurement questions prepared for before and after they started dancing. And finally, this measurement study was carried out on professional dancers consisting of 300 people in order to make sure that the dancing individuals do not see dance as a tool of sexuality. The result obtained was in accordance with the purpose of the study. When paired dance is watched with a third eye, it can appear as if they are dancing for sexuality. In fact, it is possible that the purpose for many people to learn paired dance is the theme of sexuality. However, it has been observed that people who learn to dance gradually evolve towards socialization, feeling good, and seeing it as a means of physical and cognitive well-being rather than seeing dance as a tool of sexuality. Key words: Dance, Sexuality, Sociality.
