Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels and the reasons of dental anxiety in patients applying to the clinics of Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Dentistry. Subjects and Method: A total of 1335 patient (650 male, 685 female) applied to the clinics of Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Dentistry participated in this study. Patients were carried out Dental Fear Scale (DFS) questionnaire and the evaluation of DFS was made according the age and gender. Results: Results of this study indicated that 41 % patients attending to our study had no dental anxiety. Males had higher mean ratings, therefore tended to be more anxious than females. The sight and sensation of the injection needle were the most common fear-eliciting stimuli. Although the breathing increases and increased heart rate were the most common physiological response in males, the tension of the muscles and increased heart rate were the most in females. Conclusion: It has been concluded that dental anxiety may affect the seeking of dental care. Therefore the dentist should be aware of his/her patient's fear pattern suggesting how to approach the problem.en_US
