Henry John Van Lennep'e Göre Amasya*

Abstract

Kurulduğu tarih kesin olmamakla birlikte, Amasya tarihin en eski dönemlerinden itibaren sahip olduğu jeo-stratejik önem nedeniyle pek çok milletin egemenlik tesis etmeye çalıştığı bir yer olmuştur. Antik dönemde Pontus Krallığı'nın merkezi olarak ön plana çıkan kent, daha sonra Roma hâkimiyetine geçmiştir. Amasya'nın ilk olarak Türk hâkimiyetine geçişi Danişmendliler tarafından 11. yüzyıl içinde olmuştur. 12. yüzyılda Anadolu Selçuklu Devleti'nin bir parçası olan şehir, 14. yüzyılın ilk yarısında İlhanlıların idaresi altına girmiştir. Nihayet Yıldırım Beyazid döneminde ise 1393 tarihinde Osmanlı Devleti'ne katılmıştır. Osmanlı hâkimiyetinin başladığı dönemde padişah ve şehzadeler tarafından buraya özel bir ihtimam gösterilmiştir. Kentin bir şehzade sancağı olması, onun önemini ve itibarını arttırmış ve şehrin Osmanlı Devleti açısından önemli bir merkez durumuna gelmesine yardımcı olmuştur. Son yıllarda şehir tarihi çalışmalarında araştırmacılar tarafından sıkça kullanılmaya başlayan seyahatnamelerde de, kentin bu özel öneminden dolayı askeri, idari, sosyo-kültürel, siyasi ve ekonomik durumuna ışık tutacak önemli bilgiler bulunmaktadır. Bu nedenle, bu çalışmada amaç gezi notlarında şehir hakkında oldukça detaylı bilgi veren Amerikalı misyoner Lennep'in gezi notlarındaki izlenimlerinden yola çıkarak 19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısında kentin içinde bulunduğu fiziki, coğrafi, sosyal ve ekonomik durumu eleştirel bir bakış açısı ile ele alıp değerlendirmek, analiz etmek ve kimi katkılar sağlamaktır.

Although the foundation date of Amasia is not certain, it has become one of the places which many nations had tried to establish dominance on due to its geostrategic position since the early historical periods. The town came to the fore with the capital of the Pontus Kingdom in the ancient ages and then it fell under the rule of the Roman Empire. The first Turkish dominance in Amasia took place in the 11th century during the Danişmendlis. Then the town became the land of the Anatolia Selçuk State in the 12th century and fell under the rule of İlhanids in the first half of the 14th century. Finally Amasia became the land of the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Yıldırım Beyazid in 1393. When the Ottoman period began, the sultans and the princes gave great importance to it.The town being the Sanjak of the Prince, the prestige and the importance of the town increased as well and it helped it to become an important center for the Ottoman State. It is seen that the travel notes which have been made use of in the history of towns in recent years by the researchers provide considerable information for the reader regarding the military, administrativie, socio-cultural, political and economic state of Amasia. Thus the purpose of this study is to critically undertand, analyze the physical, geographic, social and economic condition of the town and make some contributions to Amasia in the second half the 19th century using the impressions of Lennep, who give detailed information in his book.
