Tooth discoloration induced by calcium silicate-based materials in contact with blood

Purposes. To evaluate coronal tooth discoloration induced by three calcium silicatebased materials in contact with blood and compare the color changes over time. Materials and Methods. ProRoot wMTA, Biodentine and Bioaggregate were used in this study. Following mixing and placement into root canals each material was contacted with sterile cotton pellet saturated with blood. Color measurements were recorded at 3 time points: before placement of materials as baseline, 24 hours after placement and 30 days upon retrieval. Results. In all groups teeth exhibited clinically perceptible color changes. MTA induced greater discoloration than BioAggregate and Biodentine; however these differences were not statistically significant (P = 0,348). Conclusions. An interaction between erythrocytes and unset calcium-silicate based materials may be proposed. Biodentine group showed the least discoloration in contact with blood among other materials. So, discoloration may occur in short time but longer setting process might increase it. © 2016 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
