The emigration from Romania to Turkey started after the 1877-1878 war against Russia and continued until the early years of the Turkish Republic. Over one hundred thousand Turks emigrated to Turkey during the initial years of the Republic. This phenomenon can be analyzed under two subtitles: emigration during 1923-1933 and emigration during 1934-1938. Interestingly, in both periods the Turkish Government allowed only Muslim Turks to become immigrants while the emigration demands of the Turkish-speaking Christian Gagauz Turks were turned down. © Ahmet Yesevi University Board of Trustees.en_US
