MEB-BİLSEM Okullarında 7. Sınıf Öğrencilerinin Matematiksel Modelleme Becerilerinin İncelenmesi

Abstract

Yapılan bu çalışmada MEB-BİLSEM bünyesindeki yedinci sınıf öğrencilerinin matematiksel modelleme becerilerinin incelenmesi ve bu süreçte karşılaştıkları olası zorlukların belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma Karadeniz Bölgesi'nde bir büyük şehrin sınırları içerisinde yer alan Bilim ve Sanat Merkezinde (BİLSEM) gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu kapsamda araştırmanın katılımcılarını amaçlı örnekleme yöntemleriyle belirlenen sekiz öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Dörder kişiden oluşan iki odak grup belirlendikten sonra dört haftalık bir ön uygulama süreci yürütülmüş ardından esas uygulamada kullanılan Yaz İşi Problemi öğrencilere sunularak üzerinde çalışmaları istenmiştir. Tüm süreç ses ve video ile kayıt altına alınmış gözlem raporları ve öğrenci çalışma kâğıtlarıyla beraber Blum ve Ferri'nin (2009) modelleme döngüsü çerçevesinde nitel olarak analiz edilmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlar BİLSEM bünyesinde eğitim gören özel yetenekli öğrencilerin süreç içerisinde çeşitli güçlükler yaşadıklarını ortaya koymuştur. Öğrencilerin problem bağlamını tam olarak anlamlandırmadan hızlı bir şekilde çözüme yönelme eğiliminde oldukları belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin etkinlikte yer alan bazı kavramları gerçek yaşamla ilişkilendirmekte zorlanmaları problemi anlama basamağında güçlük yaşamalarına neden olmuştur. Model oluşturma sürecinde öğrenciler satış elemanlarının karşılaştırılıp seçilmesine yönelik genellenebilir bir model oluşturmakta zorlanmış ve geliştirilen modelin doğrulanabilirliği sağlanmamıştır. Diğer taraftan öğrencilerin matematiksel temsilleri kullanma ve işlemleri gerçekleştirme konusunda herhangi bir güçlük yaşamamışlardır.

This study aimed to examine the mathematical modeling abilities of seventh grade students in MEB-BİLSEM and to determine the possible difficulties they face in this process. The research was conducted at the Science and Art Center (SAC) located within the borders of a large city in the Black Sea Region. In this context, the participants of the research consisted of eight students determined by purposeful sampling methods. After two focus groups consisting of four people each were determined, a four week pre-application process was carried out and then the Summer Job Problem used in the main application was presented to the students and they were asked to work on it. The whole process was recorded with audio and video, and the observation reports and student worksheets were analyzed qualitatively within the framework of Blum and Ferri's (2009) modeling cycle. The results obtained revealed that gifted students studying in BİLSEM experienced various difficulties in the process. It was determined that the students tended to move towards the solution quickly without fully understanding the problem context. Students had difficulty in associating some of the concepts in the activity with real life, which caused them to have difficulties in the problem comprehension step. In the model eliciting process, students had difficulty in devoloping a generalizable model for comparing and selecting salespeople and the verifiability of the model developed was not ensured. On the other hand, students did not have any difficulty in using mathematical representations and performing operations.
