Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Turizm ve Otel İşletmeciliği Bölümü Öğrencilerine Rol Alma Teknikleriyle İngilizce Öğretimi

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, bazı rol oynama tekniklerinin, geleneksel dil öğretim teknikleriyle karşılaştırılarak; İngilizce'yi mesleki amaçlarla öğrenen ve gerçek başlangıç düzeyinde olmayan Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Turizm ve Otel İşletmeciliği Bölümü birinci ve ikinci sınıf öğrencilerinin, turizm sektöründeki mesleki terimleri, İngilizce dil ve iletişim becerilerini etkin olarak kullanabilmesindeki etkisi araştırıldı. Deney grubuna iletişimsel dil öğretim tekniği olarak bazı rol oynama teknikleri uygulanırken, kontrol grubuna geleneksel öğretim teknikleri uygulandı. Her iki gruptaki öğrencilere dönem başında ve dönem sonunda -rol oynama teknikleri çalışıldıktan sonra- seviyelerindeki değişikliği belirlemek amacıyla İngilizce Dil Yeterlik Sınavı uygulandı. Çalışmanın sonunda, rol oynama tekniklerinde kullanılan metinleri içeren çoktan seçmeli bir sınav verildi. Rol oynama tekniğinde dört dil becerisi bütüncül olarak öğretildiğinden, rol oynama tekniğinin yazma becerisindeki gelişmeye etkisini ölçmek için yazım sınavı ve bağımsız yazma şeklinde iki farklı yazma becerisi sınavı uygulandı. Çalışmada uygulanan bütün bu testlerin verileri bir istatistiksel analiz programı olan SPSS t-testi ile analiz edildi. Ayrıca ön test ve son testteki soru türlerine verilen yanıtların madde çözümlemesi rol oynama tekniklerinin, öğrenciler üzerinde ne derece başarı sağladığını saptamak amacıyla yapıldı. Testlerdeki sonuçlara göre iki grup arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark bulundu. Deney grubunun her bir testteki başarı puanlan kontrol grubuna göre daha yüksek çıktı. Her bir teste, iki grubun notları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark bulundu. Bu bulgular ve öğrenci davranışlarının gözlemi dikkate alındığında, rol oynama tekniklerinin turizm otel işletmeciliği bölümüöğrencilerinin, mesleki dil olarak İngilizce dil ve iletişim becerilerini geliştirmede, geleneksel öğretim tekniklerinden daha etkili olduğu söylenebilir.

VI ABSTRACT In this study, the effectiveness of some role play techniques used in the first and second year students who are the false beginners in the department of Tourism and Hotel Management at Ondokuz Mayıs University, has been investigated compared to traditional language teaching techniques in tourism sector. While the experimental group has been exposed to some role play techniques as communicative language teaching techniques, the control group has been exposed to traditional language teaching techniques. The students in both groups have been given an English Proficiency Test at the beginning and end of the semester in order to determine their proficiency level and difference in achievement. At the end of the study, a multiple-choice role play test that contains the texts of the role play techniques has been given. Since in the role play technique the four language skills are taught in an integrated way, two different writing skills exams as a dictation and free writing exam are given in order to measure the effect of the role play on the development of writing skill. Data from all the tests in the study are analyzed by the t-test in SSPS, a statistical analysis program. Furthermore, an item analysis has been made in order to test the achievement of the students through role play techniques. In all the tests, statistical difference has been detected between the experimental and the control groups, and also in terms of the English Language Proficiency Test, Role play Test and two writing Skills Exams statistical scores of the experimental group are higher at the end of the study. Overall a statistically significant difference has been found between two groups according to each test. When the findings and our observation of the students' behavior are taken into account, the role play techniques can be said to be more effective in improvingVII English Language and communication skills of the students in the department of the Tourism and hotel Management than traditional language teaching techniques.
