Sokrates'in Felsefesinde Daimon ve İşlevleri

Abstract

Daimon is an important concept for Ancient Greek. Although the concept is identified with Socrates, its history goes back to Homer and Hesiod. Homer, Hesiodos and the philosophers, poets and tragedy writers who followed them used the concept of daimon in different ways and meanings. In fact, there are many beings called daimon in Greek mythology and many words with daimon origin in Ancient Greek. Socrates, on the other hand, used the concept in different meanings and functions, unlike previous understandings of daimon. But Socrates did not write any books. We learn about his life and philosophy from Xenophon, Plato, Aristophanes and Aristotle. Aristophanes and Aristotle never mentioned Socrates' daimon. So only Plato and Xenophon remain. But, Plato and Xenophon mentioned different Socrates figures. In addition, the character of Socrates changes in the dialogues written by Plato. For example; While Socrates is an inquisitorial character in his youth dialogues, he is like a teacher in mid-term dialogues. For this reason, the concept of daimon in Plato's Socrates is periodically examined. There are also philosophers and writers who have analyzed Socrates' daimon in the modern period. Their analyzes provided guidance on how the concept of daimon was understood in the modern era. Xenophon used the concept of daimon many times in his Memoirs from Socrates, which he wrote to defend Socrates. He even begins the work by arguing for Socrates' daimon. Because, according to him, daimon is what is meant by the accusation of bringing new gods against Socrates. Therefore, Xenophon claims that the daimon is no different from other prophecies referenced in Ancient Greek religion. This claim also appears in Plato's dialogues. In addition, in Plato's mature dialogues, it is also mentioned that the daimon is a divine being between man and god who accompanies eros, madness and the souls of the dead. So, we can say that Socrates' daimon in Plato's dialogues underwent a semantic change in different periods.

Daimon, Antik Yunan için önemli bir kavramdır. Kavram Sokrates ile özdeşleşmiş olsa da onun geçmişi Homeros ve Hesiodos'a kadar dayanır. Homeros, Hesiodos ve onların ardından gelen filozoflar, şairler ve tragedya yazarları, daimon kavramını farklı biçimlerde ve anlamlarda kullanmışlardır. Hatta Yunan mitolojisinde daimon olarak adlandırılan birçok varlık ve Antik Yunancada daimon kökenli birçok kelime vardır. Sokrates ise kendisinden önceki daimon anlayışlarının aksine kavramı daha farklı anlam ve işlevlerde kullanmıştır. Ancak Sokrates herhangi bir yazılı eser kaleme almamıştır. Onun yaşamını ve felsefesini Ksenophon, Platon, Aristophanes ve Aristoteles'ten öğrenmekteyiz. Aristophanes ve Aristoteles Sokrates'in daimonundan hiç söz etmemişlerdir. Bu yüzden geriye sadece Platon ve Ksenophon kalmaktadır. Ancak Platon ve Ksenophon birbirinden farklı Sokrates figürlerinden bahsetmişlerdir. Buna ek olarak Platon'un yazmış olduğu diyaloglarda da Sokrates karakteri değişim gösterir. Örneğin; gençlik dönemi diyaloglarında Sokrates soruşturmacı bir karakterken, orta dönem diyaloglarında bir öğretmen gibidir. Bu yüzden Platon'un Sokrates'inde daimon kavramı dönemsel olarak incelenmiştir. Ayrıca modern dönemde Sokrates'in daimonunu çözümlemiş olan filozoflar ve yazarlar vardır. Onların çözümlemeleri, daimon kavramının modern dönemde nasıl anlaşıldığı konusunda yol göstermiştir. Ksenophon Sokrates'i savunmak amacıyla yazdığı Sokrates'ten Hatıralar eserinde daimon kavramını birçok kez kullanmıştır. Hatta o, esere Sokrates'in daimonunu savunarak başlar. Çünkü ona göre, Sokrates'e yöneltilen yeni tanrılar getirme suçlaması ile kastedilen daimondur. Bu yüzden Ksenophon daimonun Antik Yunan dininde başvurulan diğer kehanetlerden farklı olmadığını iddia eder. Bu iddia karşımıza Platon'un diyaloglarında da çıkmaktadır. Ayrıca Platon'un olgunluk dönemi diyaloglarında daimonun eros, delilik ve ölülerin ruhlarına eşlik eden insan ile tanrı arası ilahi bir varlık olduğundan da bahsedilir. O halde Platon'un diyaloglarında Sokrates'in daimonunun farklı dönemlerde semantik bir değişim geçirdiğini söyleyebiliriz.
