Abstract

The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to evaluate the clinical and neuroradiological characteristics of intraventricular haemorrhage in adult age group, and was to investigate the effectivity, safety, indication and contraindication of external ventricular drainage (EVD) in the treatment of intraventricular haemorrhage. Clinical and neuroradiological data was collected from the data of 39 adult cases who were retrospectively evaluated. The origin of the haemorrhage were found in 59% of cases from aneurysms, in 18% from traumatic, in 8% from hypertension and in 5% from arteriovenous malformation. In remaining 10% of cases, the origin of haemorrhage was intracerebral haemorrhage. The EVD drainage system was used in 56% of cases. The mortality rate was 67%. We concluded that aneurysmatic and traumatic intraventricular haemorrhages have high mortality rate. EVD is an effective method in the patient with intraventricular haemorrhage to control high intracranial pressure, draining haemorrhagic cerebrospinal fluid and to ensure a direct drug injection route.
